The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has described the ongoing Federal Capital Territory Area Council election as peaceful, orderly and efficient.
Speaking to members of the INEC press corps after visiting several polling units across the Federal Capital Territory, Amupitan said the electoral process has so far met expectations.
He praised the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), noting that accreditation of voters was taking less than five seconds at polling units he visited.
“The election is orderly. The election is peaceful. The BVAS has worked effectively and efficiently,” he said, adding that large voter turnout demonstrated growing public awareness and participation.
Amupitan also noted that adequate security personnel were deployed to maintain order, saying about 30 officers were present at some polling units he inspected.
He expressed optimism that the process would conclude successfully if the peaceful atmosphere is sustained until the close of polls.
Responding to questions about preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, the INEC chairman reiterated confidence in the BVAS system, stating that it strengthens electoral integrity because only accredited voters can cast ballots.
He also disclosed that reports from most polling units indicated a calm environment, except for an incident in Abaji where voting was temporarily disrupted. According to him, security operatives intervened promptly, restored order and allowed voting to resume.
