Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a couple from their home in Iluabo community, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, heightening tension in the agrarian area.
The attackers reportedly stormed Olaribigba Estate around 9:45 p.m. on Friday and whisked Mr. Jamiu Olawale and his wife away into the bush.
Residents said the couple had just arrived home in an ash-coloured Toyota Camry when the gunmen, allegedly lying in ambush, struck.
During the attack, a neighbour identified as Patrick Ilumaro, who was sitting in front of his residence, was shot while attempting to escape. He was quickly rushed to an undisclosed medical facility where he is receiving treatment.
Following the incident, angry residents staged a protest and barricaded the road leading into the community, decrying the persistent insecurity and repeated kidnappings in the area.
Confirming the incident, the Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State said tactical and conventional operatives had been deployed to the community.
Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh stated that officers are combing the area to rescue the abducted couple and apprehend the perpetrators.
He urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to assist ongoing investigations, assuring that efforts are underway to secure the safe return of the victims and bring those responsible to justice.
