EFCC Denies Link to Student Protest at Kwara State Polytechnic

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied any involvement in a recent student protest at Kwara State Polytechnic, insisting that its operations in Ilorin were unrelated to the institution.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the commission clarified that a sting operation conducted on March 24, 2026, in Agbede community targeted two buildings linked to suspected internet fraudsters and did not occur on the Polytechnic campus.

The EFCC said the operation resulted in the arrest of 30 suspects, including six students of the polytechnic, and the recovery of vehicles, phones, and laptops believed to be proceeds of crime.

“The sting operation was not remotely connected to the Polytechnic. No entrance was made into the premises of the institution and there was no disruption of any activity of the school,” the commission stated.

The agency dismissed circulating videos and claims suggesting that its operatives entered the school or sparked the protest as “contrived and outright misrepresentation.”

Despite the clarification, the statement generated strong reactions on social media. Some users alleged that EFCC operatives moved toward the Polytechnic gate during the operation and questioned the agency’s priorities. Others accused the commission of forcefully entering buildings, seizing property, and denying misconduct during operations.

In response, the EFCC maintained that all actions were lawful and consistent with its mandate, urging members of the public to report any verified misconduct through official channels.
