Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for greater unity among opposition leaders, warning that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and declining public trust require coordinated action rather than political rhetoric.

In a statement on Tuesday, Obi highlighted that the country is at a critical stage, facing unemployment, security challenges, and a need to rebuild institutions and restore confidence in governance. He urged politicians to prioritize national interest over ethnic, religious, and regional divisions.

Obi’s remarks followed the defection of former Kano State governor and ex-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move he described as a significant step in efforts to “rescue and rebuild” Nigeria’s democracy.

Kwankwaso formally joined the ADC on Monday in Kano, where he was received by the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, along with prominent opposition figures including Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun.

The development is seen as a boost for ADC and part of broader efforts to build a stronger opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi emphasised that the task ahead goes beyond winning elections, calling for leadership driven by competence, character, and commitment to national development.

He urged all opposition members and Nigerians to embrace unity, noting that only a coordinated effort can effectively address insecurity and other pressing national challenges.

“Nigeria is at a critical stage in its history… The challenges we face, economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust, require more than rhetoric. They require deliberate collaboration, disciplined leadership, and a shared commitment to national progress,” Obi said.

The former presidential candidate’s call reflects growing momentum among opposition parties to present a united front in tackling Nigeria’s political and security crises.
