A member of the House of Representatives representing Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State, Leke Abejide, has accused key political figures of taking over the African Democratic Congress (ADC) without following due process, worsening the party’s internal crisis.
Abejide made the allegation on Thursday during an appearance on Politics Today, where he claimed that a faction linked to former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola had effectively assumed control of the party structure.
When asked to identify those involved, he named David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and “others,” insisting that the takeover did not follow established party procedures.
He argued that existing party members were neither consulted nor carried along, stressing that proper internal engagement was ignored. According to him, any new entrants into the party leadership should have first engaged with existing stakeholders before taking control.
Abejide also said he had not met several prominent political figures reportedly associated with the coalition, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi.
He dismissed suggestions that he was excluded for political reasons, insisting instead on strict adherence to party rules and constitutional procedures.
“I am not a sellout. It is not because they didn’t consult me; let us do things according to the law. This party cannot be destroyed,” he said.
The lawmaker further argued that those currently occupying leadership positions in the ADC were not valid members at the time they assumed office, claiming they had not completed proper registration processes in their wards.
He maintained that the correct procedure should have involved formal membership registration, notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and a properly convened national convention before any leadership changes.
Abejide warned that bypassing these processes could trigger legal and structural complications within the party.
The ADC has recently been engulfed in internal disputes, with multiple factions laying claim to leadership positions amid growing political tension and legal uncertainty.
