Court Begins Hearing on Jonathan’s Eligibility for 2027 Presidential Race

Date:

A Federal High Court in Abuja has commenced hearing on the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The proceedings come amid growing political speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to active politics ahead of the next general election.

According to reports, the former president is expected to appear in court in person as the matter continues on Friday.

The development follows comments made by Jonathan in Abuja on Thursday, where he hinted at the possibility of joining the 2027 presidential race after supporters marched to his residence urging him to contest.

Responding to the supporters, Jonathan emphasised the need for patriotism, peaceful coexistence and credible elections in Nigeria.

“Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely,” the former president said.

A video circulating online on Friday showed preparations underway at the court premises ahead of the hearing.

The legal battle is expected to reignite debate over the constitutional interpretation of presidential term limits and whether Jonathan, who completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before serving one elected term, remains eligible to seek office again in 2027.
