Final preparations are underway in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as the city gears up to host the 3rd edition of the CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championship. A total of 35 countries have now arrived in Nigeria for the highly anticipated event, which runs from July 16 to 20, 2025, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium.
The latest arrivals, including teams from Algeria and Morocco, landed on Monday night, joining top athletics nations such as Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ghana, and Egypt. The influx of athletes has heightened anticipation for what is expected to be a showcase of the continent’s emerging talents in track and field.
Nigeria, serving as host nation, has finalized arrangements to ensure a seamless experience for visiting athletes and officials. Security, transportation, accommodation, and protocol services have been fully deployed, with authorities promising a world-class sporting environment.
Abeokuta has embraced the championship with festive enthusiasm. Cultural performances and traditional displays have added local flavor to the international event, with many foreign delegates participating in the cultural exchanges. North African teams, among others, have expressed delight at the warm reception and vibrant atmosphere.
As part of the championship activities, the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) held its official congress at the Confluence Hotel. The meeting, chaired by CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, focused on key issues including the future development of African athletics, reforms for greater sustainability, and strategies to elevate the global competitiveness of African athletes.
The CAA Congress serves as a crucial platform for shaping policy and long-term vision, emphasizing that the championship is not only about competition but also about strengthening the institutional foundation of athletics across the continent.
