The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised organisers of the Free Nnamdi Kanu protests, accusing them of heightening tension across parts of the Southeast. The party described the demonstrations as politically motivated and a reckless abuse of freedom of expression.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, the Lagos APC alleged that the protests were orchestrated by opposition figures desperate to exploit national issues for political gain.
“This so-called protest is not about justice; it is about political frustration,” the statement read. “It represents the height of bitter, destructive politics – an attempt by those who have been rejected by Nigerians at the polls to regain relevance through chaos.”
Oladejo further condemned the involvement of some opposition leaders, describing their actions as deceitful and manipulative. “It’s a classic case of the biblical hand of Jacob but the voice of Esau — hiding political desperation under the guise of activism,” he added.
According to the party, the protests are insensitive, especially given the lingering insecurity in the Southeast caused by violent agitations, kidnappings, and enforced sit-at-home orders. The APC said the demonstrations mock the memories of those who lost their lives to the region’s unrest.
“For years, ordinary citizens in the Southeast have lived in fear — traders afraid to open shops, transporters grounded by threats, children deprived of education, and families shattered by insecurity,” the statement continued. “Yet, rather than helping to heal these wounds, political opportunists are fanning the flames of division.”
Oladejo stressed that the case of Nnamdi Kanu remains before a competent court and should not be subjected to mob pressure. He reiterated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is focused on rebuilding the economy, strengthening unity, and promoting peace across regions.
The Lagos APC also urged security agencies to stay alert and called on Southeast leaders to reject divisive politics, warning that “Nigeria belongs to all, and must not be torn apart by political desperation.”
