Ahead of trial, Nnamdi Kanu consults legal team in private session

Date:

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday held a private consultation with his legal team led by former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), as part of preparations for his defence scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 23.

The meeting took place in Court 7 of the Federal High Court complex in Abuja, vacated for the purpose by Justice James Omotosho, who is presiding over Kanu’s ongoing terrorism trial. Kanu was brought to the court under the supervision of officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The session, which lasted between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon, was held in line with a directive issued by Justice Omotosho on October 16, granting Kanu’s team six consecutive days—from October 23—to open and close its defence.

During an earlier hearing, Agabi had requested that the court allow his team to meet with Kanu privately, outside DSS premises, citing fears that their discussions might be monitored or recorded by security operatives. The judge approved the request, permitting the meeting to be held within the courtroom with only Kanu and his lawyers present.

Justice Omotosho had on September 16 outlined the schedule of proceedings to ensure an accelerated hearing of the case, which has been ongoing since Kanu’s extradition from Kenya in 2021.

The trial is set to resume on Wednesday, when the IPOB leader is expected to open his defence against terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government.
