Apple Removes ICE-Tracking App Over Safety Concerns

Date:

Apple has removed an app that allowed users to report sightings of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, citing safety concerns raised by law enforcement.

The app, known as ICEBlock, was taken down from the App Store after US Attorney General Pam Bondi demanded its removal, arguing it was “designed to put ICE officers at risk.” The FBI also linked similar tracking tools to a September attack on an ICE facility in Dallas in which two detainees were killed.

In a statement Apple said: “We created the App Store to be a safe and trusted place to discover apps. Based on information we’ve received from law enforcement about the safety risks associated with ICEBlock, we have removed it and similar apps from the App Store.”

ICEBlock, launched earlier this year, was one of several apps created in response to heightened immigration enforcement under former President Donald Trump. The free app, downloaded more than one million times in the US, allowed users to crowdsource and track the movements of immigration officers.

The app’s creator, Joshua Aaron, rejected claims that it endangered ICE personnel. “ICEBlock is no different from crowd-sourcing speed traps, which every notable mapping application, including Apple’s own Maps, allows,” he said. “This is protected speech under the First Amendment.”

Aaron, a longtime tech industry professional, said he developed the app in response to what he described as a surge in immigration raids and rhetoric from Trump’s campaign. “My brain started firing on what was going to happen and what I could do to keep people safe,” he told BBC Verify.

Critics of the app, including the White House and FBI, had previously warned that such tools could be misused to monitor ICE activities. The app’s defenders argue it was intended to alert communities and safeguard undocumented immigrants from sudden enforcement actions.

The controversy highlights a broader debate over digital tools, free speech, and the balance between public safety and civil liberties in the US immigration crackdown.
