Armed bandits have killed two operatives of the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL) during a late-night attack on Tsafe town in Zamfara State.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 11 p.m. when the assailants stormed the outskirts of Tsafe along the Yankuzo Road. Residents said heavy gunfire rang out for several minutes as the attackers engaged security personnel stationed in the area.
Security sources confirmed that the two operatives on duty were overpowered by  superior fire power of the bandits and died on the spot. The attackers were said to have fled into the surrounding forest after the assault.
Following the incident, additional security reinforcements were deployed to Tsafe to prevent further attacks and restore calm in the community. Patrol teams were also dispatched along adjoining routes to forestall movements of the gunmen.
Local residents described the attack as one of several violent incidents that have recently unsettled Tsafe and neighboring communities, where bandit groups have continued to carry out abductions, raids, and killings despite ongoing military operations in Zamfara.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed concern over the rising insecurity and urged the federal and state governments to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.
“The bandits come in large numbers with sophisticated weapons, and our communities remain vulnerable. We are appealing to the authorities to strengthen security presence in Tsafe,” the leader said.
As of press time, police authorities in Zamfara had yet to issue an official statement on the killing of the two officers.
Zamfara State has remained one of the epicenters of banditry in the North-West, with recurring attacks on rural communities, highways, and security formations.
