The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani Aliyu, has appealed to farmers and herders in Zull-Gandi village, Bauchi Local Government Area, to live harmoniously and avoid actions that could lead to conflict.
Aliyu made the appeal during a peace meeting with traditional and community leaders aimed at resolving rising tensions between the two groups.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakili, the commissioner urged farmers not to cultivate crops along rocky paths or roadside areas frequently used as grazing routes by herders. He also advised them to harvest their crops promptly to prevent animals from feeding on them and triggering disputes.
At the same time, Aliyu cautioned herders against allowing their livestock to destroy farmlands or graze on crops before they are harvested.
“We can only have peace if we all cooperate, talk to each other early, and follow the law,” the commissioner said.
He stressed that anyone found violating the law or instigating unrest would face the full weight of the law.
The police chief also encouraged traditional rulers to continue working closely with law enforcement agencies to foster peace and unity in farming communities.
The peace meeting is part of ongoing efforts by the Bauchi State Police Command to curb communal clashes and promote dialogue between farmers and herders.
