Boko Haram Suspects Vandalise Power Facility, Cause Blackout in Yobe

Date:

Yobe State has been plunged into darkness following the vandalisation of electricity infrastructure by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Katarko village, Gujba Local Government Area.

The attack disrupted power supply across much of the state, forcing residents to grapple with what has become a recurring challenge in the insurgency-affected region.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the Yobe Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) said it had restored supply through an alternative source to customers in Damaturu and surrounding communities.

According to the statement, YEDC is collaborating with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to ensure bulk restoration of electricity through the national grid.

The company added that Maiduguri Metropolitan City will continue to receive power from the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP) pending full restoration.

“We encourage the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals around power infrastructure to the nearest law enforcement agency or YEDC office,” the company appealed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the vandalism as of the time of filing this report, though the incident bears the hallmark of previous Boko Haram attacks on critical power facilities in the region.
