Buhari’s Death Freezes Parliament, NASS Suspends All Business

Date:

The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.

This was announced in a statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on Monday, following a joint decision by the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

According to the statement, all plenary sessions and related legislative proceedings have been postponed until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

“I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities in the National Assembly are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22nd July, 2025,” Ogunlana stated.

The leadership of both chambers also extended condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large. Lawmakers were urged to adjust their schedules and fully participate in national mourning and burial arrangements.

The statement described Buhari as a leader who will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and integrity, adding that the suspension of proceedings was a mark of respect for his enduring legacy.
