Suleja Resident Detained After ‘No Water, No Light’ Chant

Date:

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 38-year-old Suleja resident, Hamisu Abdullahi, after he reportedly shouted “no water, no light” during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s visit to the Emir of Suleja following Eid-el-Fitr prayers. Abdullahi was taken into custody on March 20, 2026, for allegedly attempting to disrupt official proceedings.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that Abdullahi was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna on allegations of thuggery and disrupting government activities. Investigations are ongoing, though he has since been granted bail.

The incident reportedly began when Abdullahi first raised concerns about the lack of electricity and pipe-borne water in Suleja immediately after Eid prayers. The situation escalated when he voiced the same complaints during the governor’s speech at the Emir’s palace, interrupting official proceedings and drawing the attention of authorities.

Family sources confirmed that Abdullahi, an electrician and father of four from Unguwan Bayi, Suleja, spent five days in detention before being released on bail on Tuesday evening. Reports suggest the governor allegedly told him he would be “taught a lesson on how to approach leaders” before the arrest, though the police emphasized the detention was due to disorderly conduct.

The case highlights broader infrastructure challenges in Suleja and other parts of Niger State, where access to clean water and electricity remains limited. Authorities maintain that investigations into Abdullahi’s actions are ongoing while balancing public concerns over basic amenities.
