Calabar Highway Crash Kills UNICROSS Students, Staff Member

A fatal road crash along the Calabar–Itu Highway in Cross River State has claimed the lives of three students of the University of Cross River State and a staff member after a coaster bus conveying students collided with a container truck.

The accident reportedly occurred on Friday night in Odukpani Local Government Area while the students were returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. About 24 students, mostly members of the Students’ Union Government executive, were said to be onboard.

The university confirmed that the deceased include Solomon Uya, Director of Sports of the SUG; Lucky Erim, a Chemistry student and Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association president; Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management; and Mr. Anthony Arikpo, a staff member who drove the bus.

The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Onen Ebri Onen, said the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, alongside other principal officers, visited injured students receiving treatment in various hospitals and expressed deep shock over the tragedy.

“The Vice Chancellor has expressed deep shock over this tragic occurrence and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased,” the statement said.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed that the crash occurred at about 9:25 p.m. at Ikot Okon, involving a container truck and a coaster bus reportedly carrying students.

Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Akata said one victim died at the scene while another later died in hospital. Several injured victims were taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Authorities also confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene, while investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and locate the driver.

Police urged motorists to exercise caution on highways as inquiries continue.
