The Court of Appeal has upheld the conviction of former Group Managing Director of Nigerian Army Properties Limited (NAPL), Maj.-Gen. Umar Mohammed, for stealing and misappropriating company funds.
Mohammed had challenged the jurisdiction of the Special Court Martial and the validity of its verdict, but the three-member appellate panel—Justices Abba Mohammed, Okon Abang, and Eberechi Nyesom-Wike—dismissed his appeal, ruling that evidence presented clearly established the offences.
The former general was dismissed from the Nigerian Army, sentenced to prison, and ordered to refund $2,099,700 and N1.65 billion to NAPL. The court affirmed all convictions except those relating to forgery.
The judgement highlighted contradictions in Mohammed’s testimony, including his claim that NAPL never operated berthing services, which was contradicted by his own records.
Earlier, in August 2025, the Federal High Court in Lagos had ordered the final forfeiture of shares worth over N5 billion linked to Mohammed and businessman Kayode Filani, following an EFCC application. Justice Dehinde Dipeolu ruled that the shares, bought with proceeds of unlawful activities, be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government in favor of NAPL.
