Debate Trails ‘No Nerd, No NYSC’ Proposal as Stakeholders React

Date:

A proposal suggesting that graduates must meet certain practical or skill-based standards before participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme — popularly described online as the “No Nerd, No NYSC” idea — has sparked widespread debate across social and traditional media platforms.

The suggestion, which emerged in policy discussions around youth employability and skills development, argues that graduates who lack practical competence or market-relevant skills should undergo additional training before being deployed for national service.

Proponents of the idea say it could improve the quality of graduates entering the labour market and strengthen the impact of the NYSC scheme by ensuring participants possess foundational skills that align with national development goals.

They contend that such a reform would encourage universities and other tertiary institutions to prioritise practical training, innovation, and industry alignment rather than purely theoretical instruction.

However, critics have described the proposal as potentially discriminatory and impractical, warning that implementing strict competency-based restrictions for NYSC participation could disadvantage graduates from under-resourced institutions or disciplines where practical training opportunities are limited.

Stakeholders continue to call for broader consultation on the matter, emphasising that any policy adjustment affecting the NYSC scheme must balance youth development, inclusivity, and national workforce demands before adoption.
