The Enugu State Government has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to strengthen preparedness against a possible outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) following recent cases reported in Uganda. The move is aimed at boosting surveillance, rapid response and disease monitoring across the state.
Commissioner for Health, George Ugwu, said Enugu was considered a high-risk state for Ebola importation because of the presence of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, a major gateway for international travellers. He noted that although Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed Ebola case, the state could not afford to be complacent.
The government said it had designated an isolation facility for suspected Ebola cases and intensified surveillance at all points of entry, especially the airport. Health officials are also working with airport authorities and other stakeholders to ensure early detection and proper management of suspected infections.
Ugwu added that the state would expand public awareness campaigns on Ebola prevention, symptoms and reporting procedures through collaborations with healthcare workers, community leaders, religious groups and media organisations. Residents were urged to maintain proper hygiene and promptly report suspected symptoms to health authorities.
The World Health Organization State Coordinator, Adaeze Ugwu, commended the state government’s swift response, expressing confidence that the coordinated measures would strengthen Enugu’s ability to prevent and respond effectively to any potential Ebola outbreak.
