EERC Drops Enugu’s Power Tariff by ₦49

Date:

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has approved a reduction in electricity tariff for Band A customers under MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, cutting the rate from ₦209 per kilowatt-hour to ₦160/kWh. The new tariff takes effect on August 1, 2025.

The change was announced in a regulatory order titled Order No. EERC/2025/003 – Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025, issued on Sunday by the commission.

According to the EERC, the revised rate reflects federal electricity generation subsidies and was determined using the commission’s 2024 Tariff Methodology Regulations and a new Distribution Tariff Model.

MainPower, which succeeded the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company following the state’s electricity sector reforms, is the first utility to benefit from the new cost-reflective framework. The reforms stem from the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, enacted after Nigeria’s 2023 constitutional amendment decentralised electricity regulation.

EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, said the average cost of electricity service was calculated at ₦94/kWh, largely due to federal subsidies that reduce generation costs from ₦112 to ₦45. However, he noted that Band A customers would pay ₦160/kWh to help MainPower absorb financial shortfalls and cushion future rate shocks.

“Band A, at ₦160, will help MainPower manage the rate shock. If the subsidy is removed, the savings will allow them to stabilise the tariff over time,” Okonkwo stated.

He added that electricity tariffs for customers in Bands B, C, D, and E will remain unchanged for now. However, he warned that the Band A rate could increase substantially if the federal subsidy is withdrawn.

“Until then, it is only right that Ndi Enugu – Band A customers – enjoy the reduced tariff effective August 1, 2025,” he said.

The commission reiterated its commitment to cost-reflective pricing without transferring additional subsidy obligations to the Enugu State government.
