EFCC to revisit probe of Odili’s N100bn fraud allegation
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is set to revisit the case to probe the former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, the development which has triggered anxiety in some quarters in Rivers State.
It will be recalled that the anti-graft agency alleged that Odili had some questions to answer over a N100 billion fraud allegation, the probe is revisited after 16 years.
Odili had obtained a perpetual injunction towards the end of his eight years in office as Governor of Rivers State, over the allegation of being asked to provide answers to how such a huge sum of money found its way into his private account or was spent during his tenure.
His travail began during the tenure of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo when he (Odili) bid to run for the presidential ticket under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The National Security Adviser, NSA, to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who was the then EFCC Chairman, arrested Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the then Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly under Odili to extract vital information on the financial transactions of the State.
Mr. Odili in 2008, approached a Federal High Court and was granted a perpetual injunction stopping the EFCC chairman and its operatives to investigate him on the financial books of the Rivers State government, any official of the state on the subject matter and himself.
The EFCC after 16 years has come up to put its searchlight on the alleged fraud involving the former Rivers State governor in which may be difficult to insinuate whether the probe politically motivated, inspite of the political crisis bedeviling the state, even though, he is not the only former governor been investigated.
