At least eight people have died following a devastating flood in Enohia Itim community, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The disaster, which occurred on August 5 after heavy rainfall, also destroyed more than 800 farmlands, officials confirmed on Monday.

Council Public Relations Officer Sunday Nkama said the victims included three children. Three bodies have been recovered, while five others remain missing. The incident reportedly took place at a plantain plantation in the area.

The councillor representing Itim Ward, Francis Abani Okpani, confirmed the casualty figures, noting the widespread destruction caused by the flood.

Afikpo Council Chairman Timothy Nwachi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and pledged government support. He said the council would work with state and federal agencies to provide relief to affected residents.

Nwachi reminded residents that Afikpo had earlier been listed by the Federal Ministry of Environment among flood-prone areas in the country. He urged communities to improve drainage systems, keep waterways free of debris, and integrate climate change projections into flood prevention strategies.
