The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a reduction in the electricity tariff for Band A customers from N209/kWh to N160/kWh, effective August 1, 2025.
This revision, issued in Order No. EERC/2025/003, applies to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the new utility operator for Enugu State following the state’s regulatory independence from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
According to EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, the tariff cut follows a detailed review of MainPower’s cost structure using the 2024 Tariff Methodology Regulations and Distribution Tariff Model. Okonkwo explained that the revised rate is cost-reflective, factoring in the Federal Government’s generation subsidy.
“Our analysis showed that the average cost-reflective tariff is N94/kWh. However, because the government subsidises generation — paying N45 of the actual N112/kWh cost — we arrived at a Band A tariff of N160. Tariffs for Bands B to E remain unchanged,” he said.
He cautioned that the N160 rate may not be sustainable if the Federal Government withdraws the current subsidy. In such a scenario, tariffs could rise significantly.
“Until then, Band A customers in Enugu will benefit from this downward review,” Okonkwo stated.
The commission emphasised that the new rates are in line with the Enugu State Electricity Law, signed by Governor Peter Mbah in September 2023. The law grants the state regulatory control over power generation, transmission, and distribution following the 2023 Constitutional Amendment and the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023.
To ensure service quality, EERC mandated MainPower to publish daily updates on average electricity supply hours for each Band A feeder. If MainPower fails to meet the required supply levels for seven consecutive days, the affected feeder will be downgraded.
Furthermore, MainPower must report any two-day consecutive failure in service delivery within 24 hours to the commission.
Meanwhile, NERC clarified that Band A customers across Nigeria have not received electricity subsidies since April 1, 2024.
