Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed dissatisfaction with the poor state of federal roads in the state and accused the Tinubu-led administration of neglecting urgent infrastructure needs.
Speaking during a meeting with his political allies in Ekiti, Fayemi said residents were increasingly frustrated by the deteriorating condition of federal roads, noting that the government’s inaction was contributing to growing discontent.
The meeting, seen by many as a strategic move to test his political relevance ahead of 2027, comes amid speculation that Fayemi is part of an emerging opposition coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.
Fayemi lamented the Federal Government’s refusal to reimburse Ekiti State for funds spent on the construction of federal roads during his tenure as governor.
“When we did the road that BAO just finished, we almost spent ₦18 to ₦20 billion, but the Federal Government was unconcerned and refused to refund the money,” he said.
He added that if the state had received the refund, the current administration could have extended road construction projects, including a planned phase from Iyin to Aramoko.
“The governor would have taken the road to Aramoko, but the Federal Government said it’s our road, so leave it,” Fayemi stated.
He also criticized the current economic situation, citing widespread hardship. “Except we are deceiving ourselves, the people are not happy with the Federal Government due to hunger and lack of money,” he said.
Fayemi specifically mentioned several critical routes, including the Omuo–Ilasha–Ayedun–Oye road, which he said were in terrible condition and symbolic of federal neglect.
The former governor’s comments highlight mounting tensions between sub-national and federal governments over infrastructure funding and political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
