FCT Elections: Movement Restricted From 8pm as Wike Declares Friday Work-Free

Date:

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day ahead of the Saturday Area Council elections. He also announced a restriction of movement across the FCT from 8pm on Friday to 6pm on Saturday, following approval by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a special broadcast on national television and radio stations, Wike urged residents to turn out in large numbers to elect chairmen and councillors for the six area councils. He described the polls as a crucial opportunity for residents to shape the future of the FCT and encouraged voters to participate responsibly.

The minister emphasised the need for orderly conduct during the elections, calling on residents to respect electoral rules, one another and the eventual outcome of the polls. He said the movement restriction was aimed at ensuring security and smooth conduct of the exercise, directing security agencies to enforce compliance.

Wike also thanked President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing it as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections.

He expressed hope that the elections would produce quality leaders capable of advancing development, peace and prosperity in the FCT, urging residents to make their voices heard at the polls.
