Firefighters battled a blaze on Tuesday evening that tore through Emab Plaza, a four-storey building behind Mandilas on Lagos Island. The fire reportedly started on the building’s fourth floor around 9 pm and quickly spread to neighbouring apartments.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service promptly dispatched teams from the Ebute Elefun and Oniru stations to contain the flames. Deputy Controller-General Olajide Ogabi confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing by 10 pm.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service swiftly responded to a fire outbreak at Emab Plaza, reported from the fourth floor,” Ogabi said. “The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.”
Eyewitnesses reported thick smoke pouring from the upper floors as the fire spread. Flames also reached portions of adjoining structures before firefighters managed to contain the worst of the blaze.
This incident comes hours after another fire on Lagos Island earlier in the day. Around 2 pm, a six-storey building at Marina caught fire, though eight people were rescued safely.
No casualties were immediately reported at Emab Plaza, and the extent of property damage is still being assessed. Residents were evacuated from nearby buildings as a precaution.
Fire crews worked through the night to prevent the fire from spreading further. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze and have urged residents to remain cautious.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reiterated the importance of adhering to safety protocols and ensuring proper fire-prevention measures in multi-storey buildings.
Officials continue to monitor the scene, and updates are expected once a full assessment of the damage and cause is completed.
