#FreeNnamdiKanu protest triggers shutdown of businesses and offices in Ebony

Date:

Business and commercial activities in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, were severely disrupted as markets and banks remained closed in solidarity with the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The Centenary City State Secretariat, though open, saw workers deserting the premises due to fears of potential unrest. Similarly, the Abakaliki International Market, Mechanics Village, and Spare Parts Market remained open but were largely deserted by traders.

Movement within the Abakaliki metropolis was noticeably restricted, with only a few commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles operating. Many residents were seen walking to their destinations, as transportation options were limited.

Despite the widespread shutdown, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, assured that the situation in Abakaliki and other parts of the state remained calm. He confirmed that police patrol teams were deployed to ensure the safety of residents, preventing any harassment or disturbances.

Ukandu urged residents to continue their lawful activities without fear, emphasizing that security forces were on alert to protect public peace and safety. He added that no incidents of violence or attacks had been recorded so far.
