From Ilorin to Insult? Reno Omokri Drags Peter Obi Over Buhari Snub

Date:

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has taken a swipe at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent visit to Daura—only after the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page Wednesday, Omokri described Obi’s belated gesture as “medicine after death,” accusing him of political insensitivity and trying to appease Northern critics after receiving social media backlash.

“Going to Daura a day after Buhari’s burial because you were dragged on social media is medicine after death!” Omokri wrote. “The message to Arewa has already been passed and understood.”

Omokri had earlier criticised Obi for prioritising a political engagement in Ilorin over attending Buhari’s funeral. On Tuesday, Obi was represented by the National Coordinator of Obidients Movement, Dr Tanko Yunus at the 2nd Annual Colloquium of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, where he urged the North to zone the ADC presidential ticket to the South.

Omokri questioned Obi’s sense of judgment and sincerity, contrasting his presence at a southern-facing political event with his absence at what he described as a historic Northern farewell.

“Buhari—the modern-day Ahmadu Bello—wasn’t important enough for Obi to honour in Daura. Yet he expects the North to vote for him in 2027?” he wrote. “This is the same man who allegedly threatened a ‘religious war’ against the Muslim Ummah?”

In a passionate call to Northern voters, Omokri urged the Arewa community to take note of the situation and remember it during the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima led a powerful delegation of dignitaries to Buhari’s final rites in Daura, which were conducted by Chief Imam Sheikh Salisu Rabiu in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Former presidents, lawmakers, and international dignitaries such as Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Embaló, Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Zeine, and former Nigerien President Issoufou Mahamadou were all in attendance.
