Gyökeres explains cheeky celebration after Leeds double

Date:

Arsenal’s new signing, Viktor Gyökeres, has revealed the meaning behind his celebration after scoring against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Swedish striker, who joined the Gunners only weeks ago, struck twice in Arsenal’s dominant 5-0 win at the Emirates Stadium. After his first goal, he amused fans by performing a cheeky hair-flick celebration in front of the home crowd.

Gyökeres explained that the gesture was aimed at critics who mocked him following his debut against Manchester United, where he failed to register a single shot before being substituted after an hour in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Following that game, many fans joked that the forward touched his hair more than the ball. His celebration was his subtle response to those remarks.

“Yeah, it might be. It could be something to do with that,” Gyökeres told Sky Sports. “I’m really happy with the result and, of course, it was very nice to score two goals as well.”

His second goal of the night came from the penalty spot in stoppage time, sealing Arsenal’s emphatic victory. The result ensured Mikel Arteta’s side maintained a perfect start to the Premier League season and climbed to the top of the table.
