The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Wisdom Onyeaju, over the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.
The command also confirmed the arrest and detention of several police officers linked to the case over alleged professional misconduct. The officers are expected to face an orderly room trial on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, said the case came to public attention after a viral video prompted the victim’s family to formally report the incident to the command.
In the video, the victim’s elder sister alleged that an intruder broke into her 15-year-old sister’s room and assaulted her during a visit to Imo State for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
She further claimed that police officers stationed near the Government House demanded a bribe of ₦100,000 before agreeing to take the victim’s statement, an allegation that sparked public outrage online.
Confirming the arrest, the police said Onyeaju, a native of Umuekweye in Irete, was taken into custody following credible information provided by the victim’s family.
“The suspect is currently under investigation and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Okoye said.
On the allegations against the officers, the police said those involved had been identified and detained, adding that disciplinary proceedings would be conducted in line with existing police regulations.
The command assured the public of its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability, stressing that both the criminal allegation and the conduct of officers involved would be thoroughly addressed.
