Imported premium motor spirit (PMS) is currently N77 per liter cheaper than petrol from Dangote Refinery, according to the latest figures from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN). The association reported that the landing cost of imported petrol averages N721.80 per liter, compared to Dangote Refinery’s gantry price of N799 per liter.
Price Gap Explained
The N77.2 per liter difference highlights the cost advantage of imported fuel over locally refined petrol. MEMAN data shows that this gap persists despite the Dangote Refinery’s claim that its gantry price offers savings over coastal delivery costs.
Dangote Refinery’s Statement
The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery recently stated that marketers could save at least N77.2 per liter by purchasing petrol directly at its gantry. The company emphasized that reliance on coastal delivery, especially in Lagos, introduces avoidable costs, which could inflate pump prices and negatively affect consumers and the economy.
Impact of Coastal Logistics
Dangote Refinery noted that coastal logistics can add around N75 per liter to fuel costs, which, if passed to consumers, could push petrol prices close to N1,000 per liter. This underscores the financial advantage of sourcing fuel directly from the refinery rather than relying on deliveries from coastal depots.
Current Pump Prices Across Stations
Checks in Abuja on Sunday showed that retail petrol prices range from N839 to N905 per liter across major filling stations, including MRS, NNPC, Ranoil, AA Rano, AP, Mobil, Emedab, and Empire Energy. The data highlights the continuing disparity between landed costs and consumer pump prices.
