INEC Unveils Updated Guidelines for 2027 Elections

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released updated regulations ahead of the 2027 general elections, aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, and legal compliance.

Prof. Joash Amupitan presented the new guidelines to leaders of political parties at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Amupitan said the guidelines align the commission’s operations with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and emphasized that they would foster a “transparent, fair and equitable electoral landscape” for all stakeholders.

He confirmed the 2027 general elections are scheduled for January 16, with governorship and state assembly elections set for February 6.

“The compressed timetable results from the shortened timelines in the Electoral Act 2026, which requires what I call a surgical procession,” Amupitan explained, highlighting the need for precise planning and execution.

The chairman noted that the review drew on empirical data, particularly findings from the Political Party Performance Index (PPI), which identified gaps between party constitutions and grassroots realities.

Amupitan stressed that the updated regulations cover essential aspects of political party operations, ensuring parties adhere to democratic principles and electoral laws.

He added that the guidelines would provide clarity for party leadership, improve internal governance, and strengthen accountability within Nigeria’s electoral system.

The move is seen as part of INEC’s broader efforts to enhance preparedness and credibility for the 2027 elections.

Political parties have been urged to review the guidelines carefully and align their structures and processes ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
