Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, will be buried in the holy city of Mashhad, his birthplace, following his death at age 86 during reported US–Israeli attacks, according to Fars news agency. His burial site holds significance as his father is also interred at the Imam Reza shrine in the city.
Before the burial, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced plans for a large farewell ceremony in Tehran, though authorities have yet to confirm a specific date for the interment. Security concerns remain high amid ongoing regional tensions.
Following Khamenei’s death, leadership has temporarily shifted to a three-member interim council comprising the President of Iran, the head of the judiciary, and a Guardian Council jurist, in line with constitutional provisions. The council will oversee state affairs until a successor is formally selected.
The Assembly of Experts, responsible for electing the next Supreme Leader, may postpone its final meeting on succession until after the burial due to heightened security risks. Reports indicate that its headquarters in Qom and main building in Tehran were recently struck amid escalating attacks.
Iranian authorities continue to tighten security around key institutions as preparations proceed for the funeral and succession process, with regional tensions influencing both political transitions and public safety measures.
