President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria’s democratic journey has survived decades of challenges because of the resilience and determination of its people, declaring that the country’s diversity has become a source of strength for democracy.
In his Democracy Day message on June 12, Tinubu reflected on Nigeria’s political evolution over the past 27 years, noting that many observers once doubted democracy could endure in a nation as diverse as Nigeria.
“Fellow Nigerians, 27 years ago, many doubted democracy would survive here because of our diversity. Today, our diversity sustains our democracy,” the president said.
Acknowledging the challenges that still confront the country, Tinubu stressed that the spirit demonstrated during the June 12 struggle remains a powerful lesson in national endurance and unity.
“The road ahead is steep. But June 12 reminds us: Nigerians do not break. We bend, we bleed, but we do not break,” he stated.
The president urged citizens to renew their commitment to democratic ideals and national cohesion, emphasizing the need to preserve the sacrifices made by those who fought for the restoration of democracy.
“Let us renew our covenant: That the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this land,” Tinubu said.
He called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in supporting democratic governance and work collectively toward building a stronger and more united nation.
