JUST IN:Ex-AGF Kanu Agabi, SAN, Withdraws from Nnamdi Kanu’s Terrorism Trial

Date:

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi (SAN), on Thursday withdrew from representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in his ongoing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu is facing a seven-count charge bordering on terrorism filed by the Federal Government.

When the case was called on Thursday, Agabi informed the court that he and other members of the defence team would no longer be representing the IPOB leader, noting that the defendant had decided to take over his defence.

All other Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) previously involved in the matter also announced their withdrawal from the case.

Confirming the development, Kanu told the court that he would represent himself for now, though he might consider hiring new counsel later.

Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the matter, asked whether the court should assign a lawyer to represent him, but Kanu declined.

Addressing the court, the IPOB leader argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the charges against him.

Justice Omotosho had earlier granted Kanu six consecutive days, beginning October 23, to open and conclude his defence following the dismissal of his no-case submission.
