Kaduna Communities Launch Self-Help Project to Build Road Culvert

Date:

Residents of Bondon Ward in Kaura Local Government Area, Kaduna State, have initiated a self-help project to construct a double-cell ring culvert on a key road connecting 10 communities. The initiative was disclosed on Wednesday by Mr Jonathan Mamam, District Head of Bondon, Moro’a Chiefdom, in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The road, which provides access to Government Secondary School Bondon and communities including Unguwan Sankwai, Motuak, Hayin Gora, Tsunbwanu, and Rafin Gora, frequently floods during the rainy season due to the absence of a culvert, cutting off residents and delaying movement. Mamam said that in some cases, flooding forces residents to wait hours or even days before crossing.

The project, which began on Monday, involves constructing a double-cell ring culvert using pre-cast concrete pipe rings. The community requires 16 rings at N20,000 each, 30 bags of cement, red sand, and stones for protection. So far, eight rings and 25 bags of cement have been procured through local donations, including support from the Chief of Moro’a, Isiaku Tagwai-Sambo, and Mrs Ladi Bantex.

Mamam explained that the engineer and carpenter working on the project were sourced locally at no cost, while community members contribute labor in rotation to reduce expenses. He emphasized that the project reflects a tradition of self-help and community-driven development, noting that reliance on government alone is insufficient.

Community leaders, including the Moro’a Development Association Youth Wing, the Bondon Branch MDA Chairman, Mr Monday Shemang, and the Bondon Ward Councillor, Seth Ayuba, are mobilizing additional support. Mamam appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, political appointees, and sons and daughters of the area to contribute to ensure the culvert is completed before the onset of the rainy season.
