Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has accused the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, of partisanship following the police command’s withdrawal from the Independence Day anniversary parade in Kano.
Speaking during the event on Wednesday, Yusuf described the action as an affront to the people of Kano and to the spirit of national unity.
“Security agencies in Kano, in particular, should not involve themselves in partisan politics, which serves no one,” the governor said. “As Kano’s Chief Security Officer, I condemn the unethical and partisan attitude of the current Commissioner of Police in the state.”
He noted that the commissioner’s absence, along with his personnel, was a deliberate decision that embarrassed the state on a historic day. “On this Independence Day, he chose to withdraw himself and his personnel from the parade for reasons pertinent to him. Kano State’s government is not happy with this attitude,” Yusuf said.
The governor stressed that Kano remains peaceful and that residents were eager to celebrate the country’s independence together. “The good people of Kano are peace-loving and have been looking forward to this celebration. Yet, one of the security personnel, a senior officer, chose to act contrary to this spirit,” he added.
Yusuf described the withdrawal as last-minute and politically motivated. He emphasized that such actions contravene the Nigerian Constitution and undermine his role as Chief Security Officer of the state. “You can see I used my own pilot car to go around. This is unethical and disloyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
While thanking other security agencies for their participation, Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining peace and unity in Kano.
When contacted, Commissioner Bakori said he was on a condolence visit and would respond later.
