The Kano State Shari’ah Commission has raised alarm over the increasing incidence of phone thefts across the state, urging parents to take greater responsibility in monitoring and guiding their children’s behavior.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim A. Bakori, the Chairman of the Commission, Sheikh Abbas Abubakar Daneji, emphasised the urgent need for community and parental involvement in addressing the trend.
“This unfortunate incident is increasing by the day. The Commission has a vital role to play in fighting this menace, but we cannot succeed without the support of all stakeholders, especially parents and members of the community,” he stated.
He stressed that while the Commission is primarily tasked with religious education and promoting moral values, collaboration with law enforcement is essential for effective enforcement and deterrence.
“Our duty is to guide people from a religious perspective. But we also need the support of agencies like the police, who have the legal mandate to arrest and prosecute offenders,” Sheikh Daneji added.
He also disclosed that the Commission had recently met with the Chief Judge of Kano State, who expressed support for efforts to combat phone theft and indicated a willingness to review the judicial handling of such cases, including ending the option of fines as punishment.
In response, CP Bakori described the visit as timely and pledged the continued cooperation of the police in addressing phone-related crimes. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to improve public safety and reduce criminal activity in Kano.
