Four people have died and several others were injured following a stampede during a Ramadan alms distribution in Katsina State. The incident occurred on February 26, 2026, at about 9 p.m. at the residence of philanthropist Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki in the Kofar Guga area of Katsina, after a large crowd gathered to receive charity.
According to the police, a distress call was received at the Central Police Station reporting the massive crowd and ensuing chaos. Officers were immediately deployed to the scene to restore order and coordinate rescue efforts.
Victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. However, four of the injured later succumbed to their injuries, while others are still receiving care.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu of the Katsina State Command, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The police command advised individuals and organisations planning public charity distributions to notify security agencies in advance to ensure adequate security, crowd control and safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
