Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has apologised for the shortcomings recorded at the inaugural Nigeria International Airshow, assuring stakeholders that the event will improve significantly in subsequent editions.
Speaking after widespread criticism of the airshow’s modest turnout and organisational lapses, Keyamo said the maiden edition was an important starting point for Nigeria’s aviation ambitions.
“This is our first attempt. It will not be perfect,” he said. “We are taking baby steps, but we are taking them with courage, conviction, and clarity of purpose. As with every great beginning, we will learn from this experience, we will improve, and we will build upon it until the Nigeria International Airshow becomes a permanent fixture on the global aviation calendar—standing shoulder to shoulder with Paris, Dubai, Farnborough, and Singapore.”
The minister described the event as a bold signal of Nigeria’s intention to lead, innovate, and compete globally, adding that the airshow would ultimately evolve into a hub for discovery, investment, and international collaboration.
Calling for patience from induostry stakeholders and the public, Keyamo expressed confidence that future editions would reflect the lessons learned from this year’s outing.
“As we take this bold first step, I ask that we remain patient, collaborative, and ambitious,” he said. “With each edition, we will refine, expand, and elevate this airshow until it becomes a global benchmark. We may be taking small steps, but they are steps toward greatness.”
He added that the event marked the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s aviation trajectory. “The future of Nigerian aviation is bright. And today, standing here at the maiden Nigeria International Airshow, we take flight toward that future—together.”
Keyamo also highlighted recent advancements in Nigeria’s aviation regulatory environment, noting improvements in the country’s compliance with the Cape Town Convention (CTC) and Aircraft Protocol.
He pointed to the operationalisation of the Irrevocable Deregistration and Export Request Authorisation (IDERA) by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) as a major milestone. The framework now ensures transparent and efficient deregistration and repossession of aircraft in default situations, enhancing investor confidence and expanding access to aircraft leasing and financing.
“Additional legal reforms have boosted investor confidence, reduced risk perceptions, and expanded access to aircraft leasing and financing for Nigerian operators,” Keyamo added.
The minister reaffirmed that despite the slow start, the Nigeria International Airshow is on course to become a global brand and a signature event for the nation’s aviation sector.
