AUTHORITY of Kwara State Polytechnic on Friday launched the sale of its freshly harvested maize at the institution’s permanent site.
ROYAL NEWS gathered that the initiative was part of the institution’s pivotal move towards highlighting agricultural achievements, commitment to agricultural excellence and self-sustainability.
The State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Ronke Arinde, commended the institution for its innovative approach to agriculture and its contributions to the state’s food security.
She said that the event is a testament to the Polytechnic’s dedication to fostering agricultural development and promoting self-sufficiency within the educational community.
Arinde also commended the exemplary efforts of the management of the Polytechnic in redefining academic boundaries and venturing into the realm of sustainable agriculture.
The Commissioner who described KWARA POLY as a pace setter, disclosed that the initiative is not only enhancing the institution’s self-reliance but also contributing to the larger agricultural landscape of the state.
She promised government’s unwavering support for tertiary institutions in their quest for excellence.
Earlier, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed disclosed that apart from supporting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s efforts in ensuring food security and sustainability in the state, the farm project is also meant to expose students to the practical aspect of their field of study.
He added that though the Polytechnic also used it as a means of checking encroachment on its land, it also afforded the institution an opportunity to demonstrate its expertise in agricultural production.
Dr. Abdul however disclosed that out of the 129 bags of maize from the first batch of harvest, two bags have been set aside for processing into products such as custard, semovita, maize flour.
