Kwara Residents: Seven Charged Over Alleged Arson Attack

Date:

Seven suspects appeared in a Kwara State High Court in Ilorin on Friday, charged with allegedly setting ablaze the home of traditional worshipper Toyin Asabi Olorisa. The incident reportedly occurred on January 1, 2026, while the victim was away on holiday.

The suspects, including Alhaji Yekini Oloruntele, Alhaji Saliu Usman, Garba Amuda Yusuf, Alhaji Mumini Showa, Imam Isiaq Raji, and Alhaji Saliu Abubakar AbdulMumini Muhammed, were arrested by state police operatives shortly after the alleged arson. Others involved remain at large.

During the court proceedings before Justice Mahmud Gafar, the charges were read, alleging that the suspects conspired to commit arson and intentionally set fire to Olorisa’s bungalow, constituting a punishable offence under the Kwara State Criminal Act. The suspects all pleaded not guilty.

The victim’s counsel requested that the suspects be remanded in a correctional facility, but the defence opposed the application. After hearing arguments, Justice Gafar granted bail to the suspects, noting that the police had previously granted them bail. Each suspect was released on N2.5 million bail with one surety.

The case was adjourned to March 26, 2026, for further proceedings as the court continues to hear the matter.
