Liverpool’s teenage sensation Trey Nyoni Ngumoha etched his name into Premier League history on his debut as the 16-year-old striker scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Ngumoha, who is of Nigerian heritage, came off the bench to net the decisive goal in the dying moments, becoming just the fourth 16-year-old ever to score a match-winning goal in the Premier League. His composed finish ensured the champions maintained their perfect start to the season, joining Arsenal and Tottenham at the top of the table with six points from two matches.
The game had everything: goals, controversy, a red card, and a late twist. Despite being second-best for large parts, Liverpool struck first in the 35th minute when Ryan Gravenberch’s effort from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection off Fabian Schär to beat goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The hosts’ frustration grew worse when Anthony Gordon was sent off shortly before halftime for a reckless challenge. Seconds after the restart, Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s lead with a sharp finish into the bottom corner, seemingly putting the contest to bed.
But Newcastle refused to roll over. Bruno Guimarães powered in a header from Tino Livramento’s free kick on 57 minutes, sparking hope of a comeback. That belief was rewarded in the 88th minute when William Osula, deputising for the injured Alexander Isak, pounced in the box to slot home the equaliser, sending the St James’ crowd into raptures.
Just when it seemed the Magpies had salvaged a point, Liverpool produced one final surge. In the fifth minute of added time, a sweeping move ended with Ngumoha coolly converting from close range, silencing the home fans and writing a fairytale debut chapter in his young career.
The win extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run against Newcastle in the Premier League to 18 matches, underlining their dominance in this fixture.
