Millie Bright Announces Retirement From International Football

Date:

England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright has announced her retirement from international football, ending a distinguished career with the national team.

Bright earned 88 caps for England after making her debut in 2016. She played a pivotal role in England’s 2022 Women’s European Championship triumph and captained the team to a World Cup final defeat against Spain the following year.

The 32-year-old revealed her decision on her podcast, Daly Brightness, which she co-hosts with former England teammate Rachel Daly. “The reality of the last decade wearing the Three Lions has surpassed even my wildest dreams,” Bright said.

“It’s been beyond special for me, and I wish it could last forever. However, in football, all good things must come to an end, and with that, I have decided to retire from international football,” she added.

Bright had previously opted out of England’s European Championship title defence in July, citing her inability to “give 100 percent mentally or physically.”

The Chelsea captain underwent knee surgery and began counselling sessions in the close season. She described her decision to withdraw from Sarina Wiegman’s squad as “by far the best decision I have ever made.”

Bright’s retirement marks the end of a decade-long international career in which she was widely regarded as one of England’s most influential defenders.

Her achievements with the national team include European glory, a World Cup final appearance, and leadership roles that helped shape England’s rise in women’s football.

Chelsea and England fans paid tribute to Bright on social media, highlighting her leadership, professionalism, and contributions to the game.

Her focus will now return to club football with Chelsea, where she continues to play as captain and a key figure in the team’s defence.
