NAFDAC: GMOs Are Safe With Proper Regulation

Date:

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has reassured Nigerians that genetically modified organisms (GMOs), particularly in food, pose no harm to human health—provided safety measures are followed.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Adeyeye explained that GMOs are not inherently dangerous. “They are not bad for us, depending on what type of food they are and whether these safety considerations have been taken,” she said.

Adeyeye emphasized the role of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) in certifying GMO foods, stating that NAFDAC only approves such products after NBMA has confirmed their safety. She also advocated for consumer awareness, urging Nigerians to check product labels to make informed food choices.
