The Nasarawa State Government has commended the Federal Government for sitting a waste recycling plant at Angwan Rere community in Lafia, the state capital.

Mr Musa Ibrahim, Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, gave the commendation on Saturday in Lafia while addressing newsmen after the monthly sanitation exercise.

According to him, the state government had already handed over the site of the waste recycling plant to the Federal Government and expressed optimism that very soon work would commence there.

“As soon as the waste recycling plant is ready for operation, waste from the streets would be mopped up to the site for recycling to other products,” the commissioner said.

Ibrahim said that the state government was committed to ending open defecation in line with Federal Government’s policy.

He said the government has started sensitizing the people on the need for them to have toilets in their homes.

He said that the state government was also building public toilets as a way of putting an end to open defecation.

He noted that the monthly sanitation exercise has helped in curtailing the spread of diseases such as malaria and COVID-19, among others, in the state.

The commissioner lauded the people for their high level of compliance with the monthly environmental exercise.

Meanwhile, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, Chief Prosecutor, who is also a Chief Environment Officer, told newsmen that 32 were arrested for transacting their private businesses while the sanitation exercise was ongoing.

He said that the arrested people contravened Section 9(2) of the State Environmental Sanitation Laws of the state and promised to prosecute them to serve as deterrent to others.
