Popular gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has opened up about a deeply painful chapter in his life, revealing that his wife, Sarah Bassey, suffered five miscarriages, including an ectopic pregnancy, during the period he was leading the widely followed Hallelujah Challenge.
The October 2025 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, which runs from October 7 to 31, is a 25-day virtual praise, prayer, and fasting programme that attracts thousands of worshippers from around the world. This year marks the eighth anniversary of the global worship event.
Speaking during the early hours of Friday’s session, Bassey shared how he continued to minister through deep personal grief — often returning to lead worship sessions even while his wife was hospitalised.
“My wife will have to forgive me,” he said. “Do you know there were times during the Hallelujah Challenge when we had a miscarriage and nobody knew? I would still come online to praise and dance.”
Recalling one of the most difficult moments, he said, “A few years ago, she was in the hospital with an ectopic pregnancy. I would leave to lead praise and worship online, then return to the hospital. The nurses attending to her would tell me, ‘It was powerful tonight.’ Not one, not two, not three or four pregnancies — but five.”
The couple, who got married in 2013, have often been admired for their ministry and strong faith. Bassey explained that his family’s experiences have deepened his understanding of God’s faithfulness, urging Christians to remain steadfast in trials.
“So when people say, ‘Where is God?’ I say, I understand. God is faithful. One of the words He gave us was, ‘Don’t give up on God.’”
The Imela crooner emphasized that his journey is proof that even amid heartbreak and loss, God’s promises never fail.
“Our story is a reminder that faith doesn’t mean you won’t go through pain — it means God will carry you through it,” he concluded.
