The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Akwa Ibom State says it arrested 312 drug suspects and seized 803.672 kilograms of illicit substances between June 2024 and May 2025.
State Commander, Mrs. Obot Bassey, disclosed this during a press briefing in Uyo to commemorate the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s theme is “The Evidence Is Clear: Invest in Prevention, #BreakTheCircle.”
According to Bassey, of the 312 suspects apprehended, 261 were male and 51 female. The agency successfully prosecuted and secured convictions for 38 offenders within the reporting period.
She noted that 43 drug-dependent individuals received treatment and rehabilitation, while 179 others underwent counseling. Drug abuse prevention education was also conducted in 91 locations across the state.
“Drug abuse is not only a criminal matter but a public health issue,” Bassey said, emphasizing the need for a coordinated response involving families, schools, religious institutions, and communities.
Bassey called for increased investment in preventive measures, urging government at all levels, private individuals, and organizations to support efforts aimed at reducing drug use among the youth.
She also commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for its support and appealed for additional logistics, especially vehicles, to boost the agency’s operations across the 31 local government areas.
The commander acknowledged the collaboration of other security agencies in the state, saying their partnership remains vital in maintaining a drug-free society.
Bassey concluded by urging young people to avoid drug use, stressing its negative impact on health, well-being, and societal development.
