The State Commander, Hajia Fatima Popoola, disclosed this during a press briefing on Tuesday in Ilorin, the state capital.
According to Popoola, the drugs were seized in two separate operations carried out between 3:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. along the Offa and Omu-Aran axes. She explained that traffickers concealed the substances in sawdust-filled sacks and transported them in Canter trucks and a J5 vehicle, disguised to look like empty or harmless cargo.
She revealed that one suspect was caught with 1.2 tons, another with 300kg, while two suspects were linked to 720kg of cannabis.
“This is one of the biggest seizures we’ve made in a single week in recent times, and the street value runs into billions of naira. It shows just how serious drug use and trafficking have become in Kwara State,” Popoola stated.
She further noted that traffickers often move goods at odd hours to avoid detection, but NDLEA officers have intensified patrols and surveillance.
Popoola stressed that drug abuse is a major driver of violent crime in society, adding: “No sane person wakes up to commit inhumane acts or violent crimes. Most times, there is a drug influence behind it.”
