Nigerian Air Force Trains Personnel on AW109 Helicopter Maintenance in Italy

Date:

The Nigerian Air Force has trained four of its personnel on airframe maintenance for the AW109 Trekker helicopter to strengthen its technical capacity and improve aircraft readiness.

According to a statement posted on the Air Force’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, the training took place at the Leonardo Helicopter Division facility in Sesto Calende, Italy, from January 12 to February 20, 2026.

The programme included both theoretical and practical sessions, focusing on the identification of helicopter systems and subsystems, their operational functions, and essential maintenance procedures to ensure airworthiness.

Participants were also trained on proper interpretation and application of maintenance manuals to promote standardised and safe maintenance practices for the AW109S Trekker helicopter.

The training aligns with the leadership priorities of Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who emphasises capacity development, technical excellence and continuous professional growth within the service. At the end of the programme, the four personnel received certificates for successfully completing the course.
